For District 8, Growth Is Our Primary Responsibility

Our Supreme Knight has said it, and we reiterate it: The primary responsibility of District 8 and of the Councils therein is to make available to every practical Catholic man the numerous benefits of membership in the Knights of Columbus.

From the January 2017 Knightline:

At 1:03pm on May 6, 2017, District 8 Knights said…

The time has come for the members of the councils of northeast Iowa to increase our fraternal bonds. It's time for each of us active members to reach out to the less active members and invite them to fully engage in this band of brothers (and their families!). The time has come for us to use the resources at our disposal (telephone, text, email and, most especially, personal contact) to let the vast majority of our brothers--the ones who do not come to meetings and who do not participate in the activities of the council--that they are valued members and seen as they are, children of God. We need to let them know that we want to be there for them. We want them to know that we have a deep brotherly love for them and are concerned about the state of their souls, which are mirrored by their participation in the sacraments and council activities (or lack thereof). We want them to know that we don't look down on them. We want them to know that we don't just want them to do more work or just be a council officer. We need to let them know that they are valued just for who they are and that we just want to see them and interact with them and show them the love of Christ, a sacrificial love that is best represented by actions rather than words. The time has come for us to transition from the old school to the new mission field, a mission field filled with nonmembers, inactive members, indifferent members, lost members, hurting members, alienated members, suffering souls. We all suffer. We can all relate to one another, and we have a perfect Leader Who has suffered, too, our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us all gather together and band together to reach out kindly and gently to those who are slipping away from the Knights of Columbus or who have drifted off or who have never been a part of this now-to-be reinvigorated band of brothers. Sometimes it's called "retention" or "customer service," but given that our work is Spirit inspired, let's call it what it is: Sacrificial love in the likeness of Christ Himself. Let's put away our wants and desires and [sometimes] selfish motives and spend our energies serving God by reaching out peacefully, kindly, gently, but with a sense of purpose to our brothers and their families. Let us not judge them. Let us not criticize them. Let us look to ourselves to see whether or not we measure up and where we can improve. Let us not complain that "they" don't do enough. Let us do what we can and leave the rest to the others who can do it more or better or both. And let us remember that whatever the decisions of our brother Knights, those decisions will ultimately be evaluated by God rather than us. Vivat Jesus!
