Hauser & Gaspers Advancing Thru Degrees In The Knights

My main comment here is that in order to grow as Catholic gentlemen and, thus, grow closer to Christ through His blessed Mother, all Knights need to take the 2nd & 3rd degrees.

Degrees are exemplifications of what it means to be a Catholic and a Knight and are organized around the main principles of our Order ( The degrees reveal how the Knights of Columbus, as an organization, is different from other community service groups. The first degree is the introductory and initiation lesson with focus on the theological virtue of charity; whereas, the second (formation in the Faith and the Order) and third (Knighthood) degrees increase a member's knowledge of the Faith and understanding of the Order and move him toward full Knighthood. The fourth and final degree ( is the Order's Patriotic Degree and is emblematic of the Order by virtue of the characteristic chapeaux, capes, swords, etc., that fourth-degree members wear when participating in honor guards ( For a podcast on the purpose of degrees, visit

And I agree with Brothers Don Hauser and Mike Gaspers that better follow up work needs to be done to help all Knights grow in their knowledge of the Catholic Faith. To that end, Council 4208 in Decorah has instituted a catechesis program for its members; while it is really only minimal catechesis, it's something, and it only takes about 5 minutes at Council meetings.
