Hauser & Gaspers Advancing Thru Degrees In The Knights

http://iowaknightlife.org/wp-content/grand-media/audio/Hauser_Gaspers_Advancing_Thru_Degrees_in_the_Knights.mp3

My main comment here is that in order to grow as Catholic gentlemen and, thus, grow closer to Christ through His blessed Mother, all Knights need to take the 2nd & 3rd degrees.

Degrees are exemplifications of what it means to be a Catholic and a Knight and are organized around the main principles of our Order (http://www.kofc.org/en/about/principles/index.html). The degrees reveal how the Knights of Columbus, as an organization, is different from other community service groups. The first degree is the introductory and initiation lesson with focus on the theological virtue of charity; whereas, the second (formation in the Faith and the Order) and third (Knighthood) degrees increase a member's knowledge of the Faith and understanding of the Order and move him toward full Knighthood. The fourth and final degree (http://iowakofc.org/page/4th-degree-membership) is the Order's Patriotic Degree and is emblematic of the Order by virtue of the characteristic chapeaux, capes, swords, etc., that fourth-degree members wear when participating in honor guards (http://iowakofc.org/page/4th-degree-color-corps-1). For a podcast on the purpose of degrees, visit http://iowaknightlife.org/iowa-knight-life-2015-09-02/

And I agree with Brothers Don Hauser and Mike Gaspers that better follow up work needs to be done to help all Knights grow in their knowledge of the Catholic Faith. To that end, Council 4208 in Decorah has instituted a catechesis program for its members; while it is really only minimal catechesis, it's something, and it only takes about 5 minutes at Council meetings.

Thank you for this episode of Iowa Knight Life. I am a regular listener and enjoy the program very much.

Just one comment about the term "failed marriage." Given that marriage (holy matrimony) is a Sacrament instituted by God, to speak of a "failed marriage" is akin to speaking of a "failed baptism" or a "failed ordination." Marriages do not fail; rather, the people engaged in the marriage, for a variety of reasons, sometimes experience dysfunction, which can even lead to temporary or more long-term separation, which is painful. And, of course, it is possible that a marriage may never have been truly entered into, which is what the marriage tribunal attempts (with sufficient grace provided by the Holy Spirit) to discern.

God is good. Marriage is permanent and a blessing, never a failure, even when there is hardship and suffering. Christ Jesus endured the greatest of all suffering, and yet he remained true (married) to His Church. That is our calling as married people.

It would be great if, whenever there's a new edition of Knight Life, that it would be posted as a News item here so that it shows up on the Activity stream for IowaKofC.org
