About Mike & the Knights

I am married to Anita since 1983. We have 3 Children and 4 Grandchildren.

I joined the Knights in 1985 at Iowa Falls Council 5835 and took my 2nd and 3rd shortly thereafter at Eagle Grove. While there I served as the council "advocate". I credit my membership to Richard Dole and Russ Hensing who recruited and mentored me.

In 1987 I transferred to Council No 2074 in Denison and served as Grand Knight from 1989 - 1992. I was Awarded the Sioux City Diocese Grand Knight of the Year.

I served as District Deputy from 1991-1995 and earned the distinction of Top 10 District Deputy one year.

I become a 4th degree Knight at the 1992 Mason City convention and am currently a member of Garrigan Assembly in Sioux City where I am also a member of the color corps and have served in various honor guards.

I transferred to Council No 2839 Holy Rosary of Danbury IA in 1995 and served as Treasurer for a number of years and as Grand Knight from 2010-2012 & again 2016-2018

I served as State Church Director from 1994-2002.

I was elected to the office of State Warden and served 2002-2004 followed by State Secretary 2004-2006 and State Deputy 2006-2008 achieving Circle of Honor for the 2007-2008 fraternal year.

I served as the State New Council Development Director under SD Pat O'Keefe and assisted with getting 5 councils started, most notably 2 additional college councils - Drake and UNI.

In 2010 I was asked to pioneer the Iowa Knight Life www.iowaknightlife.org our "Voice of the Iowa Knights" podcast and radio program. I was involved weekly to produce, edit and narrate the audio for the years 2014-2016; the show has now moved away from weekly to occasional podcasting.

I served as the State Membership Director 2012-2014 and helped PSD Joe Ramirez to Circle of Honor one year. In 2013 I pioneered partnering with the General Agents on monthly half page ads in the 4 diocesan newspapers.

I served as State Deputy Jan-Jun 2015 completing the term vacated by Dan Werner. Notably we achieved 85%+ of our membership goal but most importantly began a statewide ultrasound initiative.

I served as State Membership Director again for SD Jon Aldrich.from 2015-2017 both years achieving 85+% of goal.

Beginning September 1, 2017 I am serving as District Master of the Fourth Degree for the Iowa District of the Fr. Juan D. Padilla province.

In February 2016 I was asked to answer the question Why Am I a Knight? Click on the link to read my answer.

Why am I an Iowa Knight of Columbus?

Posted on February 29, 2016 at 9:23pm 2 Comments

Orlando Gil of the Harlan council 3900 invited me to answer this question.  here is my response:

Why am I a Knight of Columbus?

Duc in Altum!

Simply put because of Russ Hensing and Richard Dole. In 1984 I moved as a recently married man from Nebraska to Iowa Falls Iowa for work. We were alone in the community and I was looking to make connections. Russ and Richard showed up at my apartment with evidence of an organization of men helping others while…

~ State Deputy's 2014 Fourth of July Message! ~

Brother Knights,

As you all know, our principles are charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.  Independence Day is a good day to reflect about patriotism.

As you celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends, remember to pause for a moment to think about our freedoms and how much we owe those who came before us and shaped our country into what it is today. We should especially keep in mind…

I'm pretty sure it was your profile page, Mike, that inspired me to try to increase the quality and quantity of information on my own profile page. In so many ways, you and Anita are an inspiration to us Knights. Please be assured of my prayers, as I know that we are all sinners but, if we are true to our Catholic call, we are trying to grow in the Lord, attempting to sin less and become more holy, in the same Spirit as our holy predecessors, the Saints. That being said, I would appreciate your prayers. Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, pray for us all, especially those of us who have been called into the Order of the Knights of Columbus.

I hope you’ll take a look at the Council 4208 website; all you need to do is go to DecorahKnights.tk or http://iowakofc.org/profile/decorahknights and just scroll up and down to see all the information about the Decorah Knights of Columbus; it's that simple.  If it hasn’t already been done, I hope you’ll take the time to set up a website (aka profile) for your Council on the IowaKofC.org website.  Website training is at http://iowakofc.org/page/website-training  Feel free to use DecorahKnights.tk as a model.  And please don’t forget to give us feedback on our website in the comment box at the very bottom of DecorahKnights.tk, by sending us a message via the IowaKofC.org message system (click on the “Inbox” link near the top right of your profile), or by sending email to DecorahKnights@gmail.com

I've also updated my personal profile, so I hope you'll check that out, too.

Peace and thanks.
