Iowa Catholic Conference action alerts

Statehouse leaders have not yet come to an agreement on the state budget. Most legislators are at home while leaders are at the state capitol discussing (or not discussing) a possible deal. The next deadline is really July 1, when the new fiscal year begins.

One of the main sticking points is still funding for public schools. The Democrats are supporting a $200 million increase while Republicans have proposed a $100 million increase.

There are ongoing disagreements on other…

Reflections from Pentecost

When God created the man in the garden God "formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being" (Gen 2:7). Genesis is a story of creating the material world.

John's Gospel is the story of God's re-creation, of God's establishing a new spiritual order through Jesus Christ.

Consider Genesis and the creation of the world; a certain chaos resulted; God created mankind and blew his own breath…

The Personhood Argument

Inside the pro-life movement there is a growing rift.  It is called Personhood.  What comes from it is the notion that unless all pro-life initiatives are immediately adopted, none should be supported.  This all or nothing mentality doesn't follow logically.  It is called a false dilemma and one which does far more damage than good, in the long run.

We must be more aware of our positions and understand that it is better to get a win that gives us 20% than abandon the argument and…

Religious Liberty...Our Rights....

Brother Knight and Program Director Jason Follett recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Des Moines Register regarding Religious Liberty.

What follows are his thoughts:

Religious liberty exists to allow human persons to fulfill their obligation to seek God and must be a civil or constitutional right. It is a civil right that is rooted in human dignity. While it is a civil right, it is also a natural right. Natural law says that every human person ought to have…

Iowa Catholic Conference Newsletter, May 22, 2015

The Iowa Senate and House have passed different versions of SF 510, the "standings" appropriations bill. The bill makes adjustments to appropriations that are required by state law.

Regarding an issue of concern to the Iowa Catholic Conference, both versions of SF 510 contain status quo funding of $8.6 million for the transportation of nonpublic school students. If fully funded, the appropriation would be $9.96 million. School districts control how this money is expended either by…

Iowa Catholic Conference Newsletter, May 18, 2015

Different week – same story. There’s still no deal at the legislature regarding funding for public schools. Republicans have proposed a $100 million increase and the Democrats have proposed a $200 million increase. This disagreement is holding up completion of the state budget.

In the meantime, we have put two new alerts up on our website. As usual, several issues that had been put aside earlier in the session have come back to be…
