Reflections on Pope Francis' visit to the U.S.

I was fortunate to be on the south lawn of the White House for the arrival ceremony with President Obama and Pope Francis. You can check out a photo on our Facebook page.

In taking my connecting flight to Washington, D.C. out of Minneapolis, I have to say it was fun to be on a plane with so many people who were obviously Catholic. There were lots of Pope Francis t-shirts, bishops and priests, lay people reading diocesan…

The Death of Devotions

We speak often of the changes in Roman Catholic worship since Vatican II: the exclusive use of the vernacular, the priest celebrating Mass facing the congregation; the ill-placed Sign of Peace; the replacement of Gregorian chant with "Kumbaya," and more. What this Catholic litany (pun intended) often omits, however, is the virtual disappearance of a major component of Catholic public prayer, commonly called "devotions." Today, when reportedly only about one of three Catholics in the United…

Helping those in Need

At our regular meeting on Sunday September 13th, Council 1961 (Stuart) voted to donate $300 to Jesi Rutchi, a young mother of three children with an advanced cancer diagnosis.  This local gift was used to demonstrate a local desire to help this family and further a request for Iowa Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation's "Helping Hands" fund.  Our request of $1500 from this fund was granted and a check was presented to her this week.  We will present our local gift in the coming days and…

The Loss of Something REALLY Important

I recently read a blog post from a priest which hits home.  It speaks to a lot of things that many faithful Catholics think about, but don't verbalize, either because they don't know how or because they are afraid to do so.  Please read this and come to understand that the good Father's points are all valid and salient in today's Catholic world.

Non-Changing Church?…

Composure and Participation

This is great insight from one of the most respected and noted theologians of the 20th century.  His work continues to be read and revered now that we are 15 years into the new millennium, influencing Pope St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus, and Pope Francis.  Please enjoy what Father Romano Guardini has to say:

Until now our attention has been directed mainly to the liturgical word. But Holy Mass does not consist only - even primarily - of words, although the…

Continuing the Theme of Beauty

Benedict XVI, in the Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis writes:

"This relationship between creed and worship is evidenced in a particular way by the the rich theological and liturgical category of beauty.  Like the rest of Christian Revelation, the liturgy is inherently linked to beauty: it is veritatis splendor.  The liturgy is a radiant expression of the paschal mystery, in which Christ Jesus draws us to Himself and calls us to communion."

The beauty of…
