Charity, Part III

Question 25: The object of charity

  • 25,1:  Does the love of charity stop with God or extend as well to one's neighbor?

The opening of the reply helps us to understand more precisely the sense in which acts and habits are specified by their objects: "A habit is diversified only insofar as it changes the species of the act. For every act of a single species pertains to the same habit. Now since the species of…

Charity, Part II

Question 24: The subject of charity

  • 24,1:  Is charity in the will as in its (ontological) subject?

The sentient appetite has as its object the good as apprehended by the senses, whereas the intellective appetite (will) has as its object the good as apprehended by the intellect.  The object of charity is a good that is not apprehended by the senses, and so it inheres in the will as a subject.

The reply…

Men and the Liturgy

I read the following article by Sam Guzman earlier this week.  It is something that we as Catholic gentlemen and Knights should take into consideration as we move forward with our Catholicism.

Masculinity and the Liturgy

Today, I want to broach a controversial topic, knowing full well that I may cause a ruckus. I want to talk about masculinity and the liturgy.

I will start with a few caveats. First, I do not believe the liturgy should ever be…

The Holiday Season Begins...

I was reading my brother Brian's facebook yesterday and I came across the following post.  This is about my niece Elizabeth (E).  She is my oldest niece and she has held a special place in my heart since the day she was born, almost 12 years ago.  Please read on and understand why she means so very, very much to me.

"So on the way home from the Notre Dame football game the kids and I stopped in Chicago for a little American Girl and Niketown fun. Fortunately for me, I was reminded…

St. Thomas Aquinas' View on Charity and the Reasoning

The following are questions asked by and answered by Aquinas on the theological virtue of Charity.  Please be advised that Charity isn't simply being nice or turning the other cheek, but it truly is agape love of our fellow man and an adult sense of what it means to relate to our brothers.  This is what our Order is founded upon and this is how we should let our consciences be guided.

Over the next several weeks we we will be looking at the various questions which make up Aquinas'…

From the State Chaplain

Dear Brother Knights:

This past weekend we observed liturgically the anniversary of the dedication of the Lateran Archbasilica in Rome. There is no St. John Lateran, so don't be listening for his name in the Litany of the Saints. Lateran was the last name of the Roman senator whose property was confiscated by the Emperor Nero. Later, in 313, When Constantine was emperor, and after he became a Christian, he gave that property to the pope, believing that Lateran Palace…

As we continue to look into the Knights of Columbus, we will look into our guiding principles. These principles are important to the Knights for a variety of reasons and those reasons will be explained. The four principles are: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. As Catholic men, we need an outlet to be able to express our Catholicity and the Knights give us this opportunity. If you or someone you know might be interested in joining the Knights, know that these are our core values…
