Reminder that councils are asked to refrain from finalizing any suspensions from January thru June. This is the time of year to activate your retention committee to make personal contact with your members to keep them engaged. If you haven’t already done so implement the power of 10 council structure.

Councils need to be about relationships – building a Band of Brothers. Using a modified power of 10 approach is working in many councils to keep members connected and engaged. Councils are encouraged to engage existing members in small teams with an active leader who employs a 90 day touch rule – each member is contacted 4 times per year – birthday, anniversary as well as opportunities to get involved with a charitable event. (Thank you DD Burton Rausch for this suggestion).

I believe that retention is the missing link in current Iowa Knights of Columbus activities. Retention, to me, means brother Knights watching the backs of brother Knights. Although, as Knights, we strive to serve, we must also have fraternal bonds that give us a sense of solidarity.

Here's a simple exercise that I hope will take place in my Council asap (I'm hoping to facilitate this and report back to you all here, but if you have comments beforehand (positive & negative comments are welcome) please let me know:
Have brothers at a Council meeting get on their cell phones and call brother Knights whom they know but who have not been coming to meetings and invite them to the next meeting. In this way, members who have not been attending meetings and/or participating in events will know that they are remembered and welcome to join this band of brothers in activities any time they like.

I also believe that this might help to increase recruiting by more members of the Council. Members who think they're valued, I think, are probably more likely to invite their friends and family members to join the Knights of Columbus. I think retention is intimately linked to recruitment and, thus, to providing Catholic gentlemen with the opportunity to serve Christ in concrete ways, which is what men like. And happy, satisfied men will yield happy, satisfied families.
