The "travel gavel" is presented to a Council in northeast Iowa for best membership showing at meetings with other Councils. Travel Gavel points are added up over the fraternal year, and the northeast Iowa Council with the most points earns the Travel Gavel. Attending Travel Gavel meetings is a way to learn what other Councils are doing, and winning the Travel Gavel is a source of pride for the Council. Attending Travel Gavel meetings is a wonderful manifestation of Christian unity and fraternity, and the food is usually quite good.

One more travel gavel meeting to go. Lansing has a good history of having strong turn outs at its meetings, so Lansing is STILL in the running to WIN. It's anybody's game at this point, so let's have a GREAT turn out at the next travel gavel.

Travel gavel points calculations for a council take into account the number of men present at the meeting, the size of the council, and the distance the council needs to travel to get to the travel gavel; therefore, all five councils have an even chance of winning.

This is still wide open, gentlemen. Decorah had a strong showing at the 12 Feb meeting, which allowed Decorah to take the lead away from Waukon. All Lansing has to do is bring a few guys to each of the remaining out-of-town travel gavels and have a strong attendance at home to win this.

Click here for a picture of the Travel Gavel.

For a travel gavel meeting, members of the councils in the district go to that particular meeting in addition to their own council’s regular monthly meeting. For example, if the January travel gavel meeting is in Waukon, members of the other four councils in the district can travel to Waukon, attend the meeting, and earn points toward the winning of the travel gavel; they should also attend their own council's meeting.
