On 6 June 2012, Rosa Lopez of Queen of Peace Parish in Waterloo lost her four year old daughter, Estefania Garcia Lopez, due to complications while admitted to a local hospital for long term health and medical problems. Compounding this great sadness, Rosa, the head of a household with other family members depending on her, was herself hospitalized due to this stressful situation. Recognizing various needs, Queen of Peace Parish Deacon Rigberto Real through the advice of Rev José Comparán, began a fundraising drive. One of the first groups Deacon Real turned to was Father Nicholas J. Lentz Council 11192.
The original fundraising drive through the generous donations of parishioners, Council 11192 Brother Knights, private citizens, and the Cedar Valley’s Hispanic community $530 was raised. However, Council 11192 knew more could be done. Working with Iowa Knights of Columbus Third Degree Representative to the Executive Committee John McGinness, Council 11192 submitted a request to the Iowa Knights of Columbus Foundation’s Helping Hands Fund which approved a $1000 donation.
