The Diocese of Des Moines erected a Day of the Dead altar on the second floor of the Catholic Pastoral Center in Des Moines. The Altar honors Past State Deputy Jim Chambers and his wife Jude who passed away earlier this year. They were both important pillars of the Iowa Knights of Columbus and their spirit continue to inspire Knights in all of our great state.
The "Altares de Día de Muertos" is a tradition in Mexico that dates to centuries prior to the colonization by Spain. The Catholic Church adopted this tradition as it undertook the evangelization of the New World. The Church made the Altars customary in the Feast of All Souls and introduced Christian symbols and implemented prayer services in remembrance of deceased loved ones.
You can visit the Altar during office hours at the Catholic Pastoral Center located at 601 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA. Come visit and pay tribute to the Chambers.
