Iowa Great Lakes Council 5043 Recognizes Altar Servers

Lakes area boys and girls from St. Mary’s Catholic Church were treated to a bowling and pizza recognition event over the Christmas holiday break this year.

Nearly 20 middle school and high school kids bowled a few lines at the newly renovated Corner Lanes in Spirit Lake. After that, they enjoyed pizza and beverages at nearby Pizza Ranch.

Mike Hawn, Warden of Iowa Great Lakes Council 5043, hatched the idea last fall. Up to four of the children make arrangements to serve at each of the three weekend masses every week – not to mention funerals, weddings, etc.

“They don’t get the recognition they deserve” Hawn said, “so I thought the Knights of Columbus – as an order of Catholic men dedicated to promoting charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism – should do something special for them.”

The Knights of Columbus officers chaperoning the event were Jim Miller, Grand Knight, John Steinkamp, Trustee, Mike Hawn, Warden, and Paul Katzfey, Recorder.
