For the past several years, Msgr. J.M. Hanson Council 5038 of the Knights of Columbus based in Ankeny has been supporting the mission of their neighbor Easter Seals Iowa and its Camp Sunnyside. As a result of this partnership, Council 5038 and Easter Seals Iowa embarked on a project to renovate the flagpole plaza at Camp Sunnyside.
The flagpole plaza is located between the lodge and the cabins. It is truly the central gathering space during camp season. It is where before breakfast everyone gathers to sing the “I Love Camp Sunnyside” song to after lunch where decisions are made to what fun activities the campers will participate. It is also the central rallying point of the camp for emergencies.
The renovation plan will flatten the area to allow for a uniform cement plaza that will be fully accessible for individuals who utilize wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility devices. It will enlarge the area so all campers and staff can be present together. In addition, there will be a place to honor our country, state, and camp with flags that can be raised daily. Also, it will properly reflect the natural beauty of camp. Finally, it will give Easter Seals Iowa an area which can be used for other non-camp season purposes.
In support of the effort by Council 5038 and Easter Seals Iowa, the Iowa Knights of Columbus Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities Fund recently contributed $30,000. In gratitude of this donation, the renovated area will be known as the Iowa Knights of Columbus Flagpole Plaza at Camp Sunnyside.
