Brother Jim,

Thanks, Jim, for your calm and thoughtful response to the change in uniform. Your words are soothing.

I would like to suggest that my brother Knights visit to see the goals for District 15 for the 2017-2018 fraternal year. In particular, I'd like to point out goal # 3, which is to "Strengthen the band of brothers that your Council is called to be." In addition to or as a replacement for the "Power of 10" initiative, I am suggesting to my Councils a simple alternative: At council meetings, have the membership list (with phone #'s) available, and have the brothers present sign up to call some of the men on the list who have not been at council meetings for some time. The call to those men not present at the meeting is meant to be informal: "How are you? I haven't seen you in a while. How's the family?" And maybe, must maybe, if the feel is right, invite the brother to attend the next meeting. Don't ask him to do some work. Don't ask him to be an officer. Just check in with the brother to make sure he's ok and to let him know that he's loved and missed. That's it. No program. Barely any paperwork. Just person-to-person contact. I think personal contact has more impact than any uniforms or regalia. We are called to show the love of Christ, not how fancy we look. Which gets me back to your comments, Jim: "I want my dress to reflect my reverence for the situation." Exactly!

Lots of us have shared opinions over the past week about this change. Here is mine.

I didn't join the 4th Degree to wear a specific uniform. I joined it to serve. Honor guards are very important to me and I've done about 30 in the past 4 years. The most important of those being when we honor a fallen Brother Knight. I've seen grieving families comforted by our attendance. Will their appreciation be any less when we're wearing the new uniform, versus the regalia we've been wearing? Is it possible the regalia, with it's plumed chapeaus and brightly colored capes, could have distracted others from the purpose of the event. I suspect in some cases that answer may be yes. I don't want attention on me when I participate in an Honor Guard. I want my dress to reflect my reverence for the situation. I think I can be just as reverent in the new uniform as the regalia I've been proudly wearing. I like that new 4th Degree Brother Sir Knights won't be required to buy a tuxedo to join the 4th Degree. Hopefully, this uniform change will cause more to join us, and then ultimately buy the uniform so they can participate in honor guards. These are just my opinions. I respect everyone else's. I'm getting over the surprise and am ready to fully support this change. I urge all of us to do the same.

Vivat Jesus!
