From Al Winters, Knights of Columbus Field Agent based in Mason City
Father John Naumann Council 11162 in Greene conducted a First Degree to induct two new members into the Order 25 July 2012. The new members are brothers as well as college students and are preparing to head back to college. The dad is a Third Degree Insurance Brother Knight.
Wednesday night was the only night that would work for one of the candidates The District Deputy for District 6, Bill Cordes, organized the degree on two days notice.
My youngest son, Josh, also went along as he graduated high school with one of the candidates.
When we arrived at St. Mary’s Church in Greene, the parking lot had many cars and I thought “Oh My Gosh!”. When we went into the basement we were greeted by at least 15 Brother Knights of Council 11162. They welcomed the candidates and immediately made everyone feel like “brothers”.
The First Degree was one of the best if not the best I’ve attended. The sincerity and welcoming attitude of the Brother Knights was remarkable. They offered lemonade and so many took time to visit with the new Knights, the dad, and my son. I felt Fr. McGivney was right there with us. There were a couple farmers, a construction worker, a factory worker, and a banker on the team all working together. Father Brunken was also there taking time he wouldn’t have had to in order to lead us in prayer.
This was just a wonderful experience that I know will be remembered by the new Brother Knights as well as my son.
