For the third consecutive year, West Monona High School, the Onawa-Blencoe Knights of Columbus Council 6249, Kiwanis Club of Onawa, and Fiesta Foods of Onawa co-sponsored a bus trip to the CenturyLink Center in Omaha for a Division I men's basketball game between the Creighton University Bluejays and the Chicago State Cougars.
This was the final non-conference home game for the Jays before beginning their inaugural season as a member of the Big East Conference. Everyone had a great time as the favored Bluejays declawed the Cougars 90-58.
West Monona provided the bus and Curt Seward, Director of Transportation for WMHS, drove the bus and made sure everyone got home safely. The Knights and Kiwanians took care of the transportation costs and bought a souvenir game program for each person. The game tickets were with the compliments of the Creighton University Athletic Department. Fiesta Foods donated bottles of water plus sack lunches, each of which had a cookie, chips and either a roast beef, ham or turkey sandwich.
The students and chaperones became part of a "sell out" of 17,466 fans. What an exciting and memorable experience for them! This holiday event would not be possible without the generosity of Creighton University or the donations of time and money and involvement of the sponsors.
There was no cost to the twenty-one students and seven adults who took advantage of this outing. We hope many more students will make plans to join in the fun next year as we are all looking forward to getting back to Omaha for another big-time college basketball game during the holiday break!
