UNI Knights Recognized for Supporting Law Enforcement

When Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882, one of the most important missions of the Order was to support the family. In particular, the Order has served the needs of widows and orphans.

The Knights of Columbus also has a proud history of supporting the families of first-responders. After the tragic events of 11 September 2001, the Knights of Columbus established the 9/11 Heroes Fund to provide financial support to the families of police officers, firefighters, and other public safety personnel who lost their lives during rescue and recovery operations. The Knights of St. Stephen the Witness Council 14987, chartered to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, are proud heirs to that legacy.

These Knights partnered with the Iowa chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), an organization that provides financial support and counseling to the families of law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Council 14987 organized fundraisers to allow the families of two police officers to visit the national police memorial and attend the annual police memorial service in Washington, DC.

As a sign of their future commitment to service, a member of Council 14987 now serves on the Iowa executive board for COPS; and they hope to encourage support of the families of police officers among other Knights of Columbus councils in Iowa.

In recognition of this outstanding program, Council 14987 was presented by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus with this year’s Family Activity Award during the 2012 College Conference in New Haven, Connecticut 28-30 September 2012.
