West Des Moines Knights Help Install Family Shelter's New Playground

Families staying at Saint Joseph Emergency Family Shelter in Des Moines now have a beautiful playground to enjoy!

Courtesy of a Variety Club of Iowa grant, the new playground comes two years after the shelter underwent a renovation and expansion in 2011. Volunteers from Saint Francis of Assisi Council 12422 of the Knights of Columbus and Graham Construction worked onsite 22 April 2013 to construct the playground.

“The playground provides an opportunity for parents to let their kids play in a safe environment outside, while getting some fresh air,” said Celeste Egger, Saint Joseph Emergency Family Shelter House Manager. “Currently, kids can play in the toy room or maybe soccer outside, but a playground will help the kids play better together, with more camaraderie, than they do when playing with one ball. It also enables parents to plan a more structured playtime for their kids, which helps the entire family in the long run.”

The playground will serve as a benefit to guests staying at Saint Joseph Emergency Family Shelter, the Des Moines area’s only emergency shelter in which the entire family can stay together. The shelter provides a safe, supportive environment in which a family is able to get a fresh start. Operated by Catholic Charities - Diocese of Des Moines, Saint Joseph’s provides guests with basic services such as food and shelter, as well as case management services to create a path to becoming self-sufficient.

Founded in 1924, Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Des Moines is dedicated to offering help and hope to those in need throughout central and southwest Iowa. Catholic Charities, a United Way agency, provides pregnancy counseling and adoption services, individual and family counseling, Hispanic community outreach and refugee resettlement services.
